Dear Parents,
Summer approaches, and with it, August 1st celebrations. For many years, the evening of the national holiday has seen some of the youth of Yverdon and the surrounding area get together for fire works which can lead to harmful situations.
Due to this fact, organizers are concerned. They have seen the potentially dangerous use of pyrotechnical devices (fireworks and firecrackers), particularly when used by youth. Even though the events of the last two years have taken place without incident, we wish to once again remind parents of these possible dangers. In this way, August 1st can be enjoyed safely by everyone. Making the safety of youth a priority, it is important for us to remember certain rules. You will find these on the other side of this letter, illustrated and accompanied by short messages.
We would also like to specify that the noise caused by the fireworks is only tolerated for the evening of August 1st, not before or after. As well, the use of homemade pyrotechnical devices without authorization is prohibited under the federal law concerning explosive substances (LExpl), and breaking this law may result in serious penalties. During their activities together, social workers and youth frequently discuss these topics.
As parents, you are strongly encouraged to show this letter to your children and talk to them about their own safety.
We would like to thank you for your support there last two years which has resulted in a significant decrease in disruptive behaviour related to the use of pyrotechnical devices.
The City of Yverdon-les-Bains gratefully thanks you for the attention given to this message, and wishes you and your family a very lovely summer !
Fireworks contain explosive material and their use is extremely dangerous!
An accident can lead to very serious injuries, even death. More than 200 accidents happen each year in Switzerland. A rocket must never be lit near buildings and must NEVER be lit when being held.
Fireworks must not be throw horizontally or in the direction of people. Smoking can never take place near fireworks, because of the risk of explosion.

Respect curfew times for children !
Children younger than 16 cannot be outside after 22h without written parental permission, unless they are accompanied by their legal guardian or an adult specifically designated as caregiver by the legal guardian.
Respect standards of behaviour towards community employees!
The police force as well as fire fighters and other city employees are there to ensure that, with your participation, the celebration takes place safely. It is in the interest of all to respect the instructions of these community employees as disruptive behaviour and other offences will be penalized.

Respect public property (garbages, bus shelters, playgrounds)!
Potential damages pose a problem for residents of the neighbourhood who, as a result of these damages, would be unable to use these facilitlies. Repair is very costly. In case of complaints, there could be consequences for the future of the youth responsible for damages (reimbursement, community service work, criminal record, difficulties finding work).
Respect the neighbourhood and the peace and quiet of residents!
Celebrating August 1st is normal, particularly during this difficult time. However it is important to respect the residents of the neighbourhood. They have the right to their relaxation and should not have to worry about their safety or their property in case of disruptive behaviour. Disturbance of the peace can also lead to complaints and convictions !
